The short version

  1. Mortuus is a new co-op game on Steam.
  2. It's pitched as a blend of Call of Duty Zombies and Minecraft.
  3. A free demo is available to download right now.

Mortuus is a new co-op game on Steam that takes cues from Call of Duty Zombies and Minecraft, and there's a free demo you can download and play right now.

That's a pairing you don't see every day. One is about surviving waves of the undead with friends, the other about building and digging through a blocky world. Mortuus is pitched as mashing the two together.

A Steam News write-up calls the result "a truly unique experience" and says fans of both games "will find plenty to enjoy" in it. That's the write-up's take, though, and the details of how the two halves actually fit together haven't been spelled out.

What's missing is the stuff you'd want before committing: how many players can team up, whether there's crafting or building in the Minecraft sense, how the zombie waves work, and what the full game will cost. None of that has been shared yet.

The good news is you don't have to guess. With the demo free on Steam, you can grab a friend and see for yourself whether the mix works.

There's no word yet on when the full game is coming out, or whether it's headed anywhere other than PC through Steam.

What we don’t know yet

  • The release date and price of the full game haven't been announced.
  • Player count for co-op hasn't been detailed.
  • It's not clear how the Minecraft-style elements work in practice.
  • No platforms beyond Steam have been mentioned.
