That would make Alex Garland's adaptation the most expensive film A24 has ever made, by a wide margin.

The short version

  1. A24's live-action Elden Ring film reportedly has a budget of around $200 million.
  2. That more than doubles Marty Supreme's $70 million, A24's previous biggest budget.
  3. Destructoid is also worried about A24's AI deal with Google.

A24's Elden Ring movie is reportedly going to be expensive. Really expensive. A new report puts the live-action adaptation's production budget at around $200 million, with Eurogamer describing it as almost $200 million.

Either way, that's the most A24 has ever spent on a film. The studio's previous record holder was Marty Supreme, the Timothée Chalamet-led movie, which had a $70 million production budget.

Alex Garland is directing. He previously directed Civil War for A24.

Destructoid's take is that the jump is a big one for a studio that usually sticks to indie-scale projects. Its writer pointed out that Marty Supreme was the kind of movie A24 already had plenty of experience making, while Elden Ring is a period piece that needs heavy visual effects to deliver the kind of immersion players get from the game. The outlet called it "a whole new beast."

That's a fair point. Recreating the Lands Between in live action is a very different job than a sports drama, and $200 million is a lot of trust in a studio stepping well outside its usual lane.

Destructoid's bigger worry is AI. The outlet notes that A24 signed a deal with Google a few months ago to develop more AI filmmaking tools, and its writer said they'd be disappointed but not terribly surprised if Elden Ring ends up affected by it. The piece also brings up Civil War, which drew attention for A24's use of "AI-assisted" material.

A24 hasn't said anything about AI use on Elden Ring, and the studio hasn't publicly confirmed the budget figure.

What we don’t know yet

  • A24 hasn't publicly confirmed the reported budget.
  • It isn't known whether any AI tools will be used in making the Elden Ring film.
  • No release date for the movie has been shared.
