The short version

  1. Dark Messiah of Might & Magic: Community Edition is a fan-made upgrade with official support.
  2. It adds co-op, cut content and maps that were previously console-exclusive.
  3. It's free and heading to Steam this year.

Dark Messiah of Might & Magic is getting a Community Edition, and it's adding co-op, cut content and console-exclusive maps to the 20-year-old immersive sim. It's heading to Steam this year.

Fans and modders built it, with support from Ubisoft and Valve. That support is what makes this one stand out. PC Gamer describes it as effectively an official upgrade, released for free.

PC Gamer also called the project what modders dream about: "a big, impactful, community-driven project that enhances a beloved game, with full support from its publisher."

If you've ever wanted to kick orcs off ledges with a friend, co-op is the big draw here. Bringing back cut content and maps that were stuck on console versions means PC players get a fuller version of the game than they've had before.

There's still a lot nobody has said publicly, including an exact release date and how co-op will actually work in a game built around solo kicking, spikes and physics traps. Those details should come closer to the Steam launch.

For now, the window is this year, and the price is nothing.

What we don’t know yet

  • An exact release date hasn't been announced.
  • How the co-op mode works hasn't been detailed.
  • Which specific cut content and console maps are included hasn't been listed.
