The short version

  1. Netflix and Krafton are making a live-action PUBG show.
  2. Donald Glover writes, directs, produces and stars; Stephen Glover co-writes.
  3. No release window, cast list or plot details yet.

PUBG is getting a live-action TV series at Netflix, and Donald Glover is running the show. Krafton and Netflix announced the project this week, with Glover set to write, direct, executive produce and star.

His brother, Stephen Glover, is on board as a co-writer and executive producer. The pair previously made Atlanta together.

Other executive producers include Michael Schaefer for NEON TV, Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee for LV3H, Krafton's entertainment arm, which is also helping develop and produce the series.

According to a press release shared with IGN, Krafton wants to expand PUBG into "original entertainment content." GameSpot notes Krafton has long described PUBG as a connected universe rather than just a game, and that a PUBG animated series from Castlevania's Adi Shankar is also on the way.

Turning a game about 100 players parachuting onto an island to fight to the death into a prestige drama sounds like a stretch, but there's lore to draw on. As IGN lays out, the official backstory centers on a billionaire named Sergei Kalimnik, the lone survivor of a deadly Soviet attack on the fictional island of Erangel in 1965.

Don't clear your calendar yet. GameSpot says Krafton's announcement didn't go beyond the creative team, and Destructoid reports the show hasn't entered development yet.

The game itself is still huge. GameSpot counted more than 785,000 peak concurrent users on Steam on the day of the announcement.

Netflix hasn't shared a release window, who Glover will play, or what the story will follow.

What we don’t know yet

  • No release window has been announced.
  • It's unclear which role Donald Glover will play or who else is cast.
  • The show's story and setting haven't been detailed.
  • Destructoid reports it hasn't formally entered development.
