The short version

  1. Whispering Hills is a horror mod that reworks Fallout 4's Commonwealth in the style of Silent Hill.
  2. Pyramid Head and other Silent Hill creatures show up in the Boston suburbs.
  3. PC Gamer's writer says it gives the map the bleakness and danger it lacked.

Fallout 4's Commonwealth has gone full Silent Hill. A horror mod called Whispering Hills reworks the region into something eerie and mysterious, and it brings Pyramid Head and friends along for the trip to the Boston suburbs.

PC Gamer's writeup calls it an unforgiving horror mod, and the outlet's headline goes with "brutal."

The writer's case for it is pretty simple. In their view, Fallout 4's overworld was always missing the sense of bleakness and danger that the series' other 3D wastelands offered.

There are spots that already lean into that feeling. PC Gamer points to the Glowing Sea as an area that managed to "dial up the oppression." Whispering Hills, by the writer's account, spreads that mood across the whole region instead of saving it for one corner of the map.

The verdict is short: "And I honestly love that."

If you've been looking for a reason to load up the Commonwealth again, swapping raiders and radroaches for one of horror's most recognizable monsters is a strong pitch. Picturing Pyramid Head stalking past a suburban ruin is enough to sell the concept on its own.

The mod's creator hasn't been named in the coverage so far, and PC Gamer's piece doesn't spell out how the mod is installed or whether it plays nicely with other popular Fallout 4 mods.

What we don’t know yet

  • Who made Whispering Hills has not been stated.
