Mouthwashing is getting a live-action movie from Jennifer's Body director Karyn Kusama

Mouthwashing is heading to theaters. Developer Wrong Organ and Sony Pictures' Screen Gems announced a full-length, live-action film adaptation of the indie horror game on October 29.

Karyn Kusama, known for Jennifer's Body and Yellowjackets, is directing. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, the writers behind The Invitation, are on script duty.

Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, The Black Phone) is producing alongside C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng through their Crooked Highway production house. That's a lot of horror pedigree pointed at one stranded freight ship.

The announcement follows more than two weeks of rumors about a movie that had been circulating in the game's fanbase. Now it's real.

If you haven't played it, Mouthwashing follows five crew members aboard the Tulpar, a freight ship run by the Pony Express shipping company. The ship drifts off course, and the crew has to deal with starvation, isolation, paranoia and hallucinations, plus each other.

Rock Paper Shotgun's writer praised the game for what it had to say about how corporations take advantage of their workers, and for how it plays with character perspective to hold back certain story threads. The same writer admitted to being nervous about the movie news, citing the fandom response that followed the game's release.

Mouthwashing first came out on PC in 2024, is published by Critical Reflex, and launched on consoles on October 29, the same day as the movie reveal. IGN gave it a 9 out of 10.

Exact plot details for the film haven't been confirmed, and nobody has announced casting or a release date yet.
