Overwatch fans are flooding social media with a Winston copypasta

Overwatch players have found a new way to talk about Winston: everywhere, constantly, and usually when nobody asked.

A copypasta built around the game's super smart gorilla from the moon has been spreading across social media. The format is simple. A post starts out talking about something else entirely, then swerves into a pitch for Winston, typically some version of a "smart gorilla from the moon with a Tesla cannon and a dome shield to counter AoE slop."

One example making the rounds, posted by @ltats__ on October 23, 2026, starts as a critique of Valve's Deadlock. It argues the cast isn't truly original, takes a jab at Rat King, then lands the pivot: "What about a gorilla? He could be super smart and from the moon, with a short range toggle Tesla cannon, and a dome shield to counter aoe slop."

Destructoid picked up on the trend, with its writer calling the copypasta possibly their favorite celebration of Overwatch, and saying it's almost as good as the "Winton" meme.

The same writer says they haven't been invested in Overwatch since before Overwatch 2, citing the promised PvE mode that never arrived and the game's monetization model. They also say the game seems to be back on track now, having dropped the "2" from its name and delivered a lot on the gameplay front.

That's a pretty good backdrop for a meme. When even lapsed players are getting ambushed by Winston posts and enjoying it, the gorilla's doing something right.

There's no sign Blizzard has responded to the trend.
