The short version

  1. Playable Archive is out now on Steam, and it costs nothing.
  2. It comes from DarkStone Digital, the solo studio behind The Mortuary Assistant, with DreadXP publishing.
  3. Polygon and IGN report it started life as a canceled Paranormal Activity game.

Playable Archive, a new horror game from The Mortuary Assistant developer DarkStone Digital, is out now on Steam, and it's free.

DreadXP is publishing it. PC Gamer describes it as a free "micro psychological horror experience" from the solo studio, so expect something bite-sized.

The backstory is the interesting part. According to Polygon, Playable Archive is what came out of a canceled Paranormal Activity game, and Polygon's headline says Paramount pulled the plug right before release. IGN likewise calls it the canned movie spinoff getting a new lease of life.

Polygon's headline goes as far as calling it "the Next P.T.," while PC Gamer pitches it as "basically if PT was an episode of Law and Order." That's a fun mashup to chew on.

PC Gamer's verdict is short and positive: "Playable Archive is free, and it's very good."

With Halloween days away and The Mortuary Assistant's reputation behind it, a free download is an easy thing to try on a dark evening.

It's available on PC through Steam. DarkStone Digital and DreadXP haven't announced other platforms.
