The short version

  1. Update 1.6 adds a new Hard difficulty to Silent Hill: Townfall.
  2. Hard sits between Normal and the existing Nightmare Mode.
  3. Every existing difficulty setting has been rebalanced around it.

Silent Hill: Townfall has a new Hard difficulty. Update 1.6 is out now, and it lands just in time for Halloween.

The new mode fills a gap. Townfall already had Nightmare Mode for players who wanted a real beating, but Hard sits in between that and the normal option. If Normal felt too gentle and Nightmare felt like too much, this is the setting you've been missing.

Adding a tier also meant reshuffling the others. Eurogamer reports that the update rebalanced every existing setting to make room for Hard, so expect your usual difficulty to play a little differently too.

The patch also brings several gameplay improvements as developer Screen Burn keeps refining the game following its September launch. Konami's Steam listing describes it as a major update, though the full list of tweaks wasn't spelled out.

This is the latest in a run of difficulty work. Push Square points out the game recently adjusted the behaviour of its worst enemy and made a puzzle it called baffling actually solvable, and now it's back with another round of changes to overall difficulty.

Update 1.6 is available to download now on PS5, and the update is also live through Steam.

What we don’t know yet

  • Screen Burn hasn't detailed exactly how each existing difficulty was rebalanced.
  • The full list of gameplay improvements in update 1.6 hasn't been laid out.
