Star Wars: Fate of the Galaxy, a FreeSpace 2 mod 19 years in the making, is out

Star Wars: Fate of the Galaxy is finally out. The fan-made total conversion of classic space sim FreeSpace 2 has been released for free after almost two decades of work.

Development kicked off in 2007. FreeSpace 2 itself came out eight years before that, and the mod runs on the engine of a space sim first released in 1999.

It's a FreeSpace Open project, and the team behind it has a clear pitch. According to the mod's page, the "goal is to deliver starfighter combat that captures the look and feel of the movies."

Destructoid's take is that it nailed at least part of that brief, saying the trailer shows it "certainly got the look and the sound right." The outlet called the release "A monumental modding achievement."

Long-running mods have a habit of fizzling out as life gets in the way, so seeing one this big cross the finish line after 19 years is a genuine treat. Destructoid also pointed out that Fate of the Galaxy wasn't even the first attempt at a Star Wars mod for FreeSpace 2, name-checking the earlier Star Wars Conversion Project.

If you've got a soft spot for cockpit dogfights, this one costs you nothing to try. The team hasn't shared how many missions or ships are included.
