GOG wants to sell physical copies of its PC games, but says it's complicated
A GOG business manager calls ordering a boxed copy straight from your library his "dream," though the logistics aren't simple.
The short version
- GOG would like to let you order physical copies of games you own on the store.
- Senior business manager Marcin Paczynski calls it his "dream."
- There's no plan or timeline yet, and GOG says the logistics are complicated.
GOG wants to bring physical PC games back. The store's senior business manager, Marcin Paczynski, says he'd love for players to be able to order boxed copies of games straight from their GOG library, as GamesRadar reported.
His pitch is simple. "You go to your shelf on GOG, you click on the game that you would like to receive a physical copy of, you order it," Paczynski said.
He added: "That would be a perfect scenario."
Paczynski described it as his "dream," which is the right word for now. This isn't an announced service, and GOG hasn't attached a date, a price or a list of games to it.
The catch is getting discs and boxes made and shipped. Paczynski called it "a very, very complicated thing," and GOG hasn't explained which parts of the process are the sticking points.
If you miss lining a shelf with PC game boxes, the idea of clicking a button in your library and getting a copy in the mail is a pretty great one. Whether GOG can make the logistics work is the open question, and the company hasn't said what would need to change for it to happen.
What we don’t know yet
- Whether GOG will actually launch a physical ordering service.
- Which games, prices or regions a service like this would cover.
- What specific logistical hurdles GOG is facing.
