STALKER 2 update 2.1 lets you push A-Life NPCs out much farther
The free patch lets you see and hear the Zone's wandering stalkers from farther away, and Rock Paper Shotgun says the performance hit isn't as scary as the warnings suggest.
The short version
- Update 2.1 adds options to raise how far away A-Life NPCs are visualized.
- Audio tweaks mean you can hear unscripted shootouts from farther off.
- GSC warns that going past 'Recommended' can cost framerate or cause crashes.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has a new free update, 2.1, and it goes straight for the series' signature system: A-Life, the simulation that runs the Zone's unscripted NPCs.
These are the stalkers who wander around on their own, fight other factions over turf, and sometimes settle in by a campfire with a guitar. Until now, you only saw that happening within a fairly tight bubble around you.
Version 2.1 lets you raise the distance at which A-Life NPCs are visualized. Audio changes also let you hear those unplanned firefights from farther away, so the Zone should feel busier even when you're nowhere near the action.
There's a catch, and the game itself spells it out. Both the in-game settings and the accompanying blog post warn that pushing the bubble beyond the default 'Recommended' setting, which is also the lowest, can bring lower framerates, "story quest instability" and crashes.
That's a fair warning for a game with a rough launch history. Rock Paper Shotgun, worried about a return to STALKER 2's bug-ridden early days, tested the new distance options on its own rig and found they're not actually that perilous.
RPS did spot one oddity: the expanded settings might do strange things with binoculars.
GamingOnLinux reckons the update sounds fun if you have a powerful PC. The patch follows the 2.0 update, which Rock Paper Shotgun called excellent.
What we don’t know yet
- GSC Game World's full patch notes beyond the A-Life and audio changes haven't been detailed here.
- It's unclear how the higher A-Life distances perform across different hardware or platforms.
- What exactly goes wrong with binoculars at higher settings hasn't been explained.
