The short version

  1. The Ocarina of Time remake hits Switch 2 on November 5.
  2. New additions include a jump button, sprint, full voice acting and a "Threads of Time" progress tracker.
  3. Midnight launch buyers at Argos Tottenham Court Road get a free N64 box replica.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake launches on Switch 2 on November 5, and Nintendo is throwing it a proper party.

The remake arrives 28 years after the original came out on Nintendo 64. It has a much more realistic visual style, plus some modern touches you didn't get in 1998: a jump button, a way to sprint, full voice acting, and a "Threads of Time" feature that helps you keep track of your progress.

Even with the new coat of paint, The Verge reports that many elements appear to stay faithful to the N64 release. That's a good sign if you've been hoping the dungeons and the overall shape of Hyrule survived the makeover.

The remake also honors the 40th anniversary of the Zelda series.

If you want the old-school launch experience, midnight launches are back in plenty of stores around the world. Nintendo is hosting a UK midnight launch, and anyone who buys the game at the Nintendo store at Argos Tottenham Court Road in London during it will get a free Nintendo 64 box replica. That's a great bit of shelf nostalgia.

Toronto is getting launch events too, across specific flagship EB Games and Best Buy stores. Google is joining in with a pre-launch celebration that takes its homepage back to how it looked in 1998.

Nintendo has also released a special edition Switch 2 and Switch 2 Pro Controller with Triforce imagery to mark the game's arrival.

Exact unlock times vary by region, and Polygon and IGN have both published global release time breakdowns if you're planning a late night.

What we don’t know yet

  • Nintendo hasn't detailed how closely the remake's dungeons and puzzles follow the original.
  • Full details of how the "Threads of Time" feature works haven't been shared.
  • The specific Toronto stores hosting events haven't been listed.
