The Elder Scrolls VI is officially called Sentinel, and it's pointing at Hammerfell
Todd Howard dropped the name at the end of Bethesda Game Studios' 40th anniversary video, plus a lore quote dated five years after Skyrim.
The short version
- The next Elder Scrolls has a full name: The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.
- The reveal came with a logo and a Hammerfell quote dated 4E 206.
- No release date, window or gameplay yet.
The Elder Scrolls VI finally has a name. Bethesda Game Studios confirmed this week that the next mainline entry is called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.
Todd Howard revealed it at the end of a video celebrating 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios. The clip ran under 10 minutes and walked through the studio's history before getting to the good part, with Howard calling the anniversary the "perfect time" to name the game, according to The Verge.
A logo came with it, in the classic Elder Scrolls font. If you were hoping for footage, keep the mountain range wallpaper handy. The teaser is a short clip of sand and an Elder Scroll, and that's about it.
The real treat for lore hounds is a quote that follows the title card. It's attributed to Yazar, Moth Priest of High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell, in 4E 206: "The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate."
PC Gamer pointed out that 4E 206 is exactly five years after Skyrim. Bethesda hasn't said that's when Sentinel takes place, but if it is, PC Gamer notes it would be the shortest gap between mainline entries in the series.
The name itself was no surprise. Sentinel had already been reported before the reveal, and The Verge has reported that the game will be set in Hammerfell and focus on the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves. The quote's mention of a scroll and Hammerfell lines up with that, but Bethesda hasn't confirmed the setting.
It's been a long road. The game was first announced at E3 2018, and Eurogamer counted eight years, four months, and 23 days between that title card and this one. Bethesda isn't sharing anything else for now, and there's still no release date or window.
What we don’t know yet
- Bethesda hasn't announced a release date or window for The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.
- Bethesda hasn't confirmed whether the game is set in Hammerfell or in 4E 206.
- Platforms haven't been announced.
