Epic confirms it's using AI tools to code Fortnite and Unreal Engine 6
Epic says it's more worried about moving too slowly than about AI skepticism, and its engineers are no longer writing most of the code.

The short version
- Epic says generative AI coding tools are now used on Fortnite, Unreal Engine 6 and more.
- The company says engineers "are no longer writing the bulk of the code" themselves.
- An Epic VP credits AI tools with fixing decade-old cooking bugs in Unreal Engine.
Epic Games has confirmed it's using AI tools to write code for Fortnite, Unreal Engine 6 and other projects. The company didn't hedge much about it, either.
"Yes, we are vibe-coding things," Epic said, according to PC Gamer.
The scale is the eye-catching part. Eurogamer reports Epic saying "Our engineers are no longer writing the bulk of the code," which puts AI at the center of how the engine and future Fortnite updates get built.
Epic also addressed the pushback head-on. "We are more concerned about the risks of moving too slowly than we are about AI skepticism," the company said, as reported by PC Gamer.
That's a clear statement of priorities, and it lands on a tool a huge chunk of the industry depends on. Unreal Engine runs under a lot of games beyond Epic's own, so changes to how it's made ripple outward.
Epic is pointing to results, too. Game Developer reports an Epic VP saying AI code tools have stomped out decade-old "non-deterministic cooking bugs" in Unreal Engine. Cooking is the step that prepares game content for shipping, so long-running bugs there have been a real headache for developers.
Rock Paper Shotgun noted that until now, Epic had offered more provocative soundbites and marketing lingo than specifics about how it uses generative AI across its business. This is the most detailed picture the company has given so far.
Epic hasn't put a date on Unreal Engine 6, and it hasn't said which upcoming Fortnite updates were built with AI-written code.
What we don’t know yet
- Epic hasn't said which specific Fortnite updates involve AI-written code.
- It's unclear how much of Unreal Engine 6's codebase was generated with AI tools.
- Epic hasn't shared a release date for Unreal Engine 6.
